Program Highlights:

As an NC TEACH affiliate, UNC Charlotte offers a wide array of programs for the Standard Professional I teaching license through our Graduate Certificate in Teaching program.  Students may begin programs in the fall, spring, or summer in order to prepare for accepting a teaching position or to work toward clearing their provisional (lateral entry) license.  Courses are offered face-to-face, online, and in blended formats, depending upon the particular licensure area.  Face-to-face instruction is delivered in evening and Saturday courses throughout the year, as well as special summer institutes for lateral entry teachers.  Classes and schedules are designed for working adults.

UNC Charlotte also offers the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in the areas listed above.  Students may choose to earn their Standard Professional I teaching license through the Graduate Certificate in Teaching or the first phase of the Master of Arts in Teaching.  To continue into the second phase of the MAT program, candidates must be teaching full time in their licensure area in order to develop the advanced competencies that lead to the “M” license and a 10% pay raise.  Students who enroll in the Graduate Certificate program may apply for admission to the MAT at a later time.  All courses in the Graduate Certificate program will count toward the MAT as long as all work is completed within six years.

Program Costs:

The following are predictable expenses for the Standard Professional I license.

  • UNC Charlotte Graduate School application fee for the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and/or the Master of Arts in Teaching

  • Examination fee, depending upon admission status (Praxis I, Miller Analogies Test, and/or Graduate Record Examination

  • Tuition and fees for 18 -27 hours of graduate coursework in the licensure program, depending upon teaching area

  • Tuition and fees for any additional background content courses required for licensure

  • Textbooks and technology expenses

  • UNC Charlotte parking permit

  • Health insurance through your own carrier or through UNC Charlotte

  • Praxis II specialty area tests:  Required for elementary education, special education, and Teaching English as a second language.  Required for most other areas if you are or have ever been a lateral entry teacher.  Praxis II is a state licensure requirement

Note:  Cost management strategies:

  • UNC Charlotte charges lower tuition in the summer and through distance education, which includes online courses for lateral entry teachers and off-campus offerings

  • Many school systems offset the cost of courses for lateral entry teachers and/or for teachers working toward their master’s degrees.  This support is especially true for the FOCUS schools in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

  • Students admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Teaching or the Master of Arts in Teaching qualify for federal financial aid at the graduate level of funding

Application deadlines:

October 1st for spring semester

April 1st for summer sessions

May 1st for fall semester
